Meet William Cushwa, PhD

William (Willy) Cushwa is a biology instructor with more than 30 years of combined teaching experience at the high school, community college, and university levels.

His higher-education journey began when he attended Virginia Tech and completed a BS (Biology) and a High School Science Teaching Certificate. Willy then earned an MS (Animal Science) from UC-Davis, focusing on animal physiology and quantitative genetics.

He moved back to Virginia and taught high school science classes for two years before returning to UC-Davis to complete a PhD (Genetics) focusing on molecular genetics. In 1995, Willy joined the Biology Department at Clark College in Vancouver, WA. For the past 29 years, he has taught a Human Biology course for students who aren’t science majors.

Willy strives to create resources to help these students learn, understand, and appreciate their bodies’ complexity.

In 2023, Willy founded Biology411.com to dramatically decrease the cost of textbooks and companion resources to students. He created a FREE OpenStax-based Human Biology textbook, which is available to instructors and students as a PDF file, as well as optional companion student resources and instructor resources for those who adopt the textbook.
